Brief overview of the project

Boiler plant upgrade for a large secondary school in Surrey, B.C. We replaced two ineffecient boilers with twelve new, rack-mounted condensing IBC Boilers.

A Caleffi 549 Series hydraulic separator (low-loss header) was used. Due to the multiple heating zones of the school and staging of the new boilers, this system provided an excellent opportunity for the Caleffi hydraulic separator to ensure the fluctuating flows and temperatures on either side of the hydraulic separator.

Variable speed secondary pumping was also provided which was controlled by differential pressures of each heating water zone.

Design goal

The design goal was to replace an inefficient boiler plant nearing the end of its serviceable life with a new, reliable, efficient plant utilizing twelve new boilers.

Installation description

This was a retrofit.

Yes, challenges included dealing with multiple zones and an older design with coils, rads, etc. designed for high temperature / low temperature systems. The original pump flows to each zone varied due to different heating requirements. The Caleffi hydraulic separator ensures the needed flows between the primary and secondary loops.

System performance

The system is preforming very well, is reliable and easy to maintain.
